Office for Worship, Melbourne

I noticed today some significant improvements in the web site of the Office for Worship of the Archdiocese of Melbourne.

Many sections are described as "coming soon" but there is helpful information on the links I have listed.

I found the Scale of Payments for Liturgical Musicians surprising. For a Level C and D musicians with "only a limited level of skill, with no experience or qualifications" the recommended hourly rate is $20. For weddings they should be paid $50. For funerals $40.

This if for a function such as organist or choir leader. But if they can do both the recommended payment is: $27 hourly, $70 for a wedding, and $60 for a funeral.

Why should they be paid more for a wedding, a little less for a funeral and a lot less otherwise? Perhaps a wedding and funeral would be a little longer. But I would have thought most funerals were longer than most weddings.

But on the positive side, I am glad to see the recommendation that some lay people be paid for performing a liturgical ministry.
